COVID-19 support grants

COVID-19 support grants

The BSN has launched an exceptional grant scheme aimed at helping to safeguard the future of neuroendocrine research by supporting early career scientist members of the BSN, whose careers are threatened by the current circumstances. The BSN can only fund a small number of grants, so successful applications will need to demonstrate that there will be a real benefit to neuroendocrinology from funding received.

This first round of grants covers four circumstances, detailed below. Other grant types may follow as circumstances, and budget, dictate.

  1. Grants to cover up to three months’ salary for final year postdocs
  2. Grants to cover up to three months’ stipend for final year PhD students
  3. Grants to current project support grant holders, where the outcomes of these grants are under threat.
  4. Specific COVID-19 related animal costs required for completion of work by a final year PhD student or postdoc

Deadline for this first round of grants: 16 June 2020

Grants to cover up to three months’ salary for final year postdocs

The BSN will fund up to 10 grants of up to £7k to cover up to three months’ postdoc salary in exceptional circumstances. Given the aim of safeguarding the future of neuroendocrine research, applicants will need to show both that their institution or funder will not support them during/after the lockdown period and also that their research will suffer serious detriment if support is not forthcoming. Examples of the latter might include inability to complete research intended to lead to a published paper; inability to apply for further grants. Grants can be applied for by the PI or by the postdoc directly. The applicant and/or postdoc should be BSN members as at 20 May 2020. A letter must be included from the researcher’s institution assuring that, if funded, the BSN would not carry any contractual liability to the researcher.

Grants to cover up to three months’ salary for final year PhD students

The BSN will fund up to 10 grants of up to £5k on the same basis as the postdoc grants above. Grants can be applied for by the PI or by the student directly. The student should be a BSN member as at 20 May 2020.

Grants to current BSN Project Support Grant holders, where the outcomes of these grants are under threat

Where the holder of a current BSN Project Support Grant can demonstrate that additional costs are being incurred due solely to the COVID-19 situation and that the outcomes of the grant will be seriously compromised by lack of funds to pay these additional costs, the BSN may exceptionally agree to pay a small additional grant of up to £2k. Grant applicants must be in good standing with their membership payments. The applicant should be a BSN member as at 20 May 2020.

Grants for COVID-19 related animal costs

Where there are specific animal-related costs that have arisen as a result of the lockdown measures in place due to COVID-19 and associated animal costs are incurred in order to complete projects for ECRs and these costs are not met by the institution or funder, the BSN may exceptionally agree to pay a small additional grant of up to £2k. Grant applicants must be in good standing with their membership payments. The applicant should be a BSN member as at 20 May 2020.
